Brief introduction of the whole camp
My summer camp with iDVENTURE had just finished a few days ago, my opinion on things was completely overturned through the process of the fortnight-long summer camp, the experience had shaped me into a slightly different person than myself before I participated in this summer camp. The summer camp was divided into 2 main parts, the first week in Camp Lutherhaven and the second week in the University of Idaho.
Camp life in Lutherhaven
Before the summer camp, I was quite depressed to go to Lutherhaven without knowing it thoroughly, and I expected more fun from the coding camp in the University of Idaho, but the reality was totally different, Lutherhaven was unquestionably the best place I’ve been with iDVENTURE.
Lutherhaven is a Christianity camp established 7 decades ago in Idaho, I wasn’t so excited about that without experiencing it myself, but after I did, I was fascinated by literally everything in there. I met my counselor Alec along with my American friends on the first day, and with hours of chatting, we were already quite significant to each other, well prepared for the activities at night and through the week of Lutherhaven. They were all kind and humorous.
The week was fulfilled with joyfulness, every morning we would be waken up by Alec and have breakfast after we brushed our teeth and get changed. After breakfast, we had morning worships about christianity, that was the time when we sing and dance along with gentle guitar chords. As a Chinese camper, it wasn’t really necessary for me to believe in their religion, but it was great to learn something about their culture and religion while we share our own culture with campers and counselors from the US, I enjoyed doing that a lot.

After intermingling our cultures, we got to choose our own activity to do for the 2 1-hour-sessions from the “Discovery Centers”, there were a lot of activities available for us, but soccer had always been my prior choice for the “Discovery Centers”. Next we had lunch, not like breakfast in Lutherhaven, lunch changed everyday, the food was way better than Chinese food and the food in my school. After lunch we usually swim in the lake, there are a lot of activities on the lake. Then the activity varies everyday in camp(all of them decided by my counselor Alec), mid rope courses, woodcrafting, and teaching them Chinese were all pretty good, but sometimes challenging.
Dinner was served after the activities and the food was as good as our lunch. After dinner, we had fun in some simple games until the sky gets darker. Usually the sky turns dark at 9:30 pm in Idaho, and we usually go to the evening worships at 9 pm. These were really similar compared to the morning worships, we sang more songs in the evening worships. At the first night’s evening worship, I was confused a lot by the songs and I refused to sing along, but by the last worship, my melody, lyrics, and dance moves were already as good as the American campers.
That just marked the end of a Lutherhaven camp day, I enjoyed more than enough everyday in Lutherhaven, I learnt both how to work with my American friends and how to challenge new things by myself through all of these.
My Highlights
I had a lot of highlights during the camp, the ones I loved the most were playing soccer with Americans and teaching American campers and counselors the Chinese language. Soccer had always been my favorite sport, it required teamwork and sportsmanship, the people I played with were all pretty tough, it was a lot of challenge for me to play with them in this circumstance. Scoring goals in the games was much harder than I expected, but I kept pushing and I made I few through the week. I was shocked, or even a bit frightened after I realized that I scored a goal when I played against American campers. It might be very ordinary for an American camper to score one, but a goal had always meant a lot to me.
My second highlight of Lutherhaven was teaching American campers Chinese. We went through the basics and the greetings in Chinese, but afterwards, I came up with the idea to teach the Americans an extremely “popular” song in China—鸡你太美. I didn’t expect that teaching them this song would be too influential, but eventually, they just started shouting out 鸡你太美 everywhere, we actually ended up with the whole camp knowing about that. Alec was very obsessed with 鸡你太美, when we made woodcrafts, he carved the phrase onto a piece of wood and hanged it on his backpack, when we rowed a canoe intensely, he used 鸡你太美 as the beat, and made us energetic for the whole time.

The camp life in Lutherhaven should be a very memorable time for me. Through the camp, I had grew a lot and gained a lot of confidence. At last, I need to give a special thanks to my counselor Alec, he treated all of us like his own family, I hope that I can see him again somewhere later.
Conclusion & Thanks
In conclusion, the summer camp was overall successful, I also had fun in the Silverwood theme park, Seattle, and my host family, which were right between the parts. I learnt how to be independent, and grew a lot of confidence. Besides thanking my counselor Alec in Lutherhaven, I also need to give credits to all Lutherhaven staff members, my host family, all iDVENTURE staff members, and all iDVENTURE campers, without all of you, I won’t be able to have this much of fun in the camp, and good luck! In my future life, I will recall all of these unusual experiences whenever I face difficulties, and use the things I’ve learnt with iDVENTURE to overcome the difficulties.
